Stop Longline Fishing

Commercial longline fishing, for your favourite tuna or hake steak, is a fishing method that uses thousands of baited hooks hanging from a single line 50-100 km long. The line is left in the water for days, or even weeks, causing huge amounts of suffering to animals caught and killed by these hooks. Longlines indiscriminately catch and kill sea birds, turtles, sharks and many other non target species. Sharks in particular are being wiped out by long line fishing, as illegal shark finning practices are entrenched in the commercial longline fishing industries. Commercial fisheries kill an estimated 100 million sharks every year. Our greed for convenient seafood is the only thing that keeps these commercial fisheries in business!

We remove about 95 million tons of wild animals from our oceans every year. Our total annual bycatch is about 40% of this. That's 38 million tons of non target species, and discarded animal waste every year!

Consider your seafood choices carefully.

We, the consumers, have the collective power to turn the tide on the current devastation that is happening to our oceans.

Eat smart. Buy smart. Don’t be surfeit people.
