Stop Drag Netting
Shrimp are some or the most destructive items on the menu. Drag netting or bottom trawling for shrimp uses heavily weighted nets that are dragged across the ocean floor. Heavy metal doors,10m high and 60m long, hold the massive nets open as they drag across the seabed, destroying just about everything in their path, and catching huge amounts of bycatch. Up to 80% of a shrimp haul is bycatch, almost all of which is discarded back into the ocean as dead bio waste!
We remove about 95 million tons of wild animals from our oceans every year. Our total annual bycatch is about 40% of this. That's 38 million tons of non target species, and discarded animal waste every year!
Consider your seafood choices carefully.
We, the consumers, have the collective power to turn the tide on the current devastation that is happening to our oceans.
Eat smart. Buy smart. Don’t be surfeit people.
