Shark finning is the marine equivalent to rhino and elephant poaching, and is in some ways even more cruel. Shark meat isn't worth much, so the fins are cut off the live shark and the shark is tossed back in the water to suffocate or bleed to death. Today, nearly half of all shark species are endangered and near extinction. This is as a direct result of human activities, like overfishing and shark finning. Commercial fisheries kill an estimated 100 million sharks every year. Our greed for convenient seafood is the only thing that keeps these commercial fisheries in business! Shark fin soup is considered a delicacy in China, and in spite of continued conservation efforts, almost all restaurants in Hong Kong still serve shark fin soup.

Supporting shark tourism is an important step towards curbing the slaughter of these majestic apex predators. Living sharks are worth so much more than dead ones. One dead hammerhead shark earns about $200 for a fishing trawler, one live hammerhead shark can earn the tourism industry as much as $1.6 million over its lifespan.

We remove about 95 million tons of wild animals from our oceans every year. Our total annual bycatch is about 40% of this. That's 38 million tons of nontarget species, and discarded animal waste every year!

Consider your seafood choices carefully.

We, the consumers, have the collective power to turn the tide on the current devastation that is happening to our oceans.

Eat smart. Buy smart. Don’t be surfeit people.
