For 400 million years sharks have roamed the worlds oceans. They have survived five mass extinctions, including the one that killed the dinosaurs. Today, nearly half of all shark species are classified as critically endangered, and near extinction. This is as a direct result of human activities like overfishing. Commercial fisheries kill an estimated 100 million sharks every year. Our greed for seafood is the only thing that keeps these commercial fisheries in business!
Supporting shark tourism is an important step towards curbing the slaughter of these majestic apex predators. Living sharks are worth so much more than dead ones. One dead hammerhead shark earns about $200 for a fishing trawler, one live hammerhead shark can earn the tourism industry as much as $1.6 million over its lifespan.
We remove about 95 million tons of wild animals from our oceans every year. Our total annual bycatch is about 40% of this. That's 38 million tons of non target species and discarded animal waste every year!
